Paragraph Formatting in Microsoft Word 2003

Paragraph Formatting

Paragraph formatting is applied to entire paragraphs of text. Word offers a variety of paragraph formatting options that are explained below.

Alignment is the way lines of text line up betwen the indents. The options are left or right aligned, centered on the page, or justified.

Paragraph alignment

Indentation is the spacing between text and margins. Word allows you to set left and right margins, as well as indentations for the first line of a paragraph and hanging indents.

Paragraph Indentation

Bullets are used to designate unordered lists. They combine hanging indentation and bullet characters for each paragraph.

Bulleted Lists

Numbering combines hanging indentation and automatic numbering for each paragraph.

Line spacing is the mount of vertical space between lines. The spacing can be set to single space, 1 - 1/2 lines, double space, at least a certain amount, exactly a certain amount, or multiple lines.

Paragraph spacing refers to the amount of space before and after the paragraph.

Pagination options refer to widow control, orphan control, keeping lines together, keep with next, and page break before, determine how automatic page breaks occur in the document.

Line numbering and hyphenation options determine whether the paragraph should be excluded from line numbers and hyphenation.
