Introduction to RSS Tutorial: Channel Elements

This section of the RSS Tutorial will explain the components of channel elements. The <channel> element usually contains one or more <item> elements. Each new article to your blog or web site, or new podcast should have its own <item> in your RSS feed. As discussed, earlier, <channel> elements must include a <title>, <link>, and <description> elements, but it can also include additional optional elements.

The <category> Element

The <category> element helps to categorize your feed. It enables RSS aggregators to group sites based on their category.

The <copyright> Element

The <copyright> element notifies about copyrighted materials in your web site, blog, or podcast. For GuidesandTutorials, it may look something like this:

Channel Elements also allow you to include an image for aggregators to display when they present a feed.

The <image> element has three required sub-elements.

  • <url> - which defines the URL address for the GIF, JPEG, or PNG image
  • <title> - which defines the text to display if the image is not available or could not be shown
  • <link> - which defines the hyperlink to the website that is providing the channel

Another optional element of the <channel> is the <language> element.

The <language> element is used to specify the language used to write your document of record your podcast. This element makes it possible for RSS aggregators to group sites based on language.




Identifies one or more categories for the RSS feed (optional)


Provides information about copyrighted material


Provides a description of the channel


Provides a URL to the documentation about the format used in the feed


Identifies the program used to generate the feed


Provides a link to an image to be displayed by the aggregator. Images must be a GIF, JPEG, or PNG that represents the channel.


Identified the language that the feed is written in


Identifies the last modified date of the content in the feed


Provides the hyperlink to the channel


Provides the last publication date for the content of the feed








Provides text input that should be displayed with the feed.


Provides the title of the channel




Provides the email address of the web master of the feed
