Introduction to Advance Organizers
Advance organizers were popularized by David P. Ausubel in 1968. Based on his subsumption theory, his approach is for the teacher to be responsible for organizing and presenting what is to be learned.
Advance organizers provide concepts and principles to the students directly. Ausubel maintains that a person's existing knowledge about a concept is the most important factor in whether new material will be meaningful and how well it can be learned and retained. Advance organizers help the leaner to integrate new materials with what they already know; they "prepare" the learner for new information.
| I can see how these would be useful in teacher professional development workshops, especially in those that cover diverse topics that need to be linked. Our Internet Institute for example, provides training for teachers in information literacy, project based learning, and technology application skills. |
The outcome of the Internet Institute is that teachers create a project-based lesson that integrates technology in their classroom. The advance organizer can help teachers to see how all of the pieces of the institute fit together for the lesson they will be creating and it can help prepare them for the learning experience.
I teach another workshop on effective presentations using PowerPoint.
Good designers must consider
many visual aspects and how they enhance the instruction or
the content of the presentation. Designers must consider
fonts, colors, spacing, use of graphics and illustrations, animations
and transitions, backgrounds, contrast, and other features. There are
entire volumes written just about fonts and typography.
An advance organizer that helps to structure all of the different considerations that must go into an effective presentation and what a designer needs to know about each would be helpful for teachers just learning about good design in PowerPoint
